Life of Pi was definitely a work of magical realism, because there was fantastical elements that made it to be a work of magical realism. The story was obviously made up with Pi being on a boat with a tiger who could devour him into pieces without even blinking. I mean Pi was the best meal that Richard Parker could had ever gotten. Pi had no self-defense, because he was weak and useless compared to the tiger. So basically Richard Parker could easily kill Pi, but he didn't. Also it was impossible that that there was a carnivorous island. There's was no such thing as a floating mangrove island packed with Meerkats. That was just impossible!!!! Life of Pi had a normal setting that took place in a normal environment with normal characters. Also the tone of the book was pretty serious because Pi was experiencing and worshiping three religions. Pi was on the boat stranded in the middle of the ocean without any assistant from anyone. Life of Pi was a work of magical realism, because he wouldn't last a second without being torn from limb to limb.
In my opinion, Martel wrote this book to show the readers that each person is created to be different. Each person is unique, and have rights to do what he/she wants. That it's okay to worship any religion because it all comes down to your own faith and dedication. We are all humans, and we're nothing different from each other. We should all respect each other for who we're, because when we die one day it doesn't matter what religion, race, or personality we have.It only matters about what you choose to do in your life, and how you make the best out of it.
